The Marion County Historic Genealogical Society originated in the minds of several men and women years ago, on January 16, 1990, when 15 people sat down and organized the society. The name was changed in 2004 when we received our 501 (c) 3 non-profit designation. The Marion County Library Board members of 2003-2004 were instrumental in getting the library genealogy room doubled in size. New shelves were built to hold the old record books of the county.
The purpose of the Society is to collect, maintain, preserve and share data of historic and genealogical significance in the area today known as Marion County, Arkansas. To this end a permanent collection of printed and microfilmed material was established. This collection is located in the Genealogy Room of the Marion County Library in Yellville and is available to everyone.
The Genealogy Room has a computer for research purposes and a microfilm reader with printers attached to both. There are many family genealogy books and surrounding county books for research as well as volumes of the old Marion County Tax Assessment books.
We have Personal Assessment and Real Estate Assessment record books starting in 1890 through 1988. All the family genealogy books have been refurbished and put in protective page protectors and 2 ring binders. They are much easier to handle and to make copies from now. There are several rolls of micro film of the newspaper of Marion County available from March 4, 1885 to February 10, 1994. The Library is in the process of buying more rolls of micro film of the newspapers and they will be available soon. The microfilm reader in connected to the computer and to a printer. It allows for viewing, copying and printing of historical documents.
There are also research materials from surrounding counties such as Baxter, Boone, Carroll, Newton, Searcy and Stone as well as related information from applicable states such as Tennessee, Pennsylvania and more.
Several books have been written and are available for sale by the society and by individual members, They are located behind the main library desk and are available during regular library hours.
